RELEASE: Groenewald Slams Education Minister for Dodging Oversight of WA School Programs
Australian Christians Leader has raised serious concerns over the Education Minister's refusal to clarify her department's oversight of programs being taught in Western Australian schools.
Australian Christians Leader, Maryka Groenewald MLC, has today raised serious concerns over the Education Minister's refusal to clarify her department's oversight of programs being taught in Western Australian schools.
"During budget estimates, I was told the Education Department couldn't answer my questions about the Respectful Relationships Program because it was developed by the Department of Communities," said Maryka Groenewald MLC.
"Yesterday, I asked the Education Minister if her department oversaw and approved all programs taught in WA schools, and if so, why they couldn't answer my questions on the contents of the Respectful Relationships Program."
"She would not confirm whether her department actually reviews the content of every program rolled out in WA schools. Instead, she said that principals carry that responsibility for Government schools, and that they don't regulate the programs adopted by private schools."
"That is egregious. Surely the Education Department must be aware of what is being taught if it is being rolled out statewide. Parents expect the Department to be accountable for the content taught to their children, not to hide behind local principals."
"The Education Minister cannot continue to dodge responsibility while potentially radical content seeps into our classrooms," Groenewald concluded.
